As you read this post, The UP Experience 2011 is just 3 weeks away! We’ve been waiting all year and can’t believe it’s already here.
As we wait on pins and needles for October 27th we thought we’d take a closer look at what some of our UP 11 speakers have been up to this week:
Dr. Anthony Atala was featured on the CBS News in New York for his incredible, pioneering work in growing human organs and the incredible opportunities this breakthrough technology stands to give the thousands on transplant lists in the U.S. His talk at UP11 is definitely one not to be missed.
Also featured on CBS News this week, fellow UP 11 speaker Katie Linendoll, talking about her predictions for yesterday’s big Apple iPhone announcement. See what she expected and if it lined up with the big announcement.
Memory guru Ron White contributed a great actionable memory tip to an interested article produced by Men’s Health and ABC News, “17 Ways to Upgrade Your Whole Life.”
Meanwhile Sal Khan, founder of Khan Academy which is revolutionizing education, was interviewed on CNN about how to get kids excited about science, technology, engineering and math.

Yesterday marked one month until UP 2011. We can’t believe its already here! We’d love to hear which speaker you are most excited to hear this year!
And, while we’re busy with final preparations for this year’s UP Experience, our UP alumni have been busy pushing their initiatives forward. This past week:
John Gerzema at Inc.com took a look at “Why You Should Hire E-lancers,” citing UP 08 speaker Sir Ken Robinson‘s work on learning that takes place outside of the classroom and what these “citizen-teachers” can offer the rest of us.
As always tech companies are making headlines and UP 10 speaker David Pogue is breaking down the details for us. Don’t miss his analysis of Netflix’ recent announcement that it will be splitting off its DVD service into a separate service, Qwikster.
UP 09 alumni Michio Kaku was in the news this week as physicists around the world commented on an experiment that appeared to call into question Einstein’s theory of relativity.

It’s been a busy week at UP! We hit 100 followers on Facebook this week, posted so many past UP talks on YouTube and dove into all the details that need to be ironed out with The UP Experience just over a month away!
We imagine our UP alumni and UP 11 speakers have also been busy, here are some of their activities making headlines this week:

UP 11 speaker and memory expert Ron White was featured in SUCCESS Magazine this week. White had an MRI taken at the University of Texas this week, while he memorized information. The results showed that White uses 35 percent more of his brain when memorizing than the average person! Don’t miss him at UP 2011 when he shares his tips and tricks!
UP 08 speaker Craig Kielburger took to the Huffington Post to talk about the incredible difference education can make for a child in their article, “An Education Takes Kids from Slums to Schools.”
On a light note, UP 10 speaker and New York Times tech columnist David Pogue took some time to help us all get up to speed on the latest cultural references in his guide, “Internet Memes 101: A Guide to Online Wackiness.”

Who guessed it? The clues we posted on Friday to our mystery UP Alumni guest all point to one person, Brené Brown!
Brené wowed attendees in 2009 with a frank, engaging and moving talk on her studies of shame in our society. Her research has gone on to focus on leadership, vulnerability and “wholeheartedness.” She’ll join us again at UP 2011 for an update on the last few years of her work.

If you are not already familiar with Brene, she holds her Ph.D, LMSW, and is a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate School of Social Work. Her sense of humor, along with 10 years of research studying vulnerability, courage, authenticity, and shame make her an extraordinary presenter who helps us all look at the UP side of being vulnerable.
Brené spent the first five years of her decade-long study focusing on shame and empathy, and is now using that work to explore a concept that she calls Wholeheartedness. She poses these questions: How do we learn to embrace our vulnerabilities and imperfections so that we can engage in our lives from a place of authenticity and worthiness? How do we cultivate the courage, compassion, and connection that we need to recognize that we are enough – that we are worthy of love, belonging, and joy?
Brené is the author of The Gifts of Imperfection: Letting Go of Who We Think We Should Be and Embracing Who We Are and I Thought It Was Just Me (but it isn’t): Telling the Truth About Perfectionism, Inadequacy, and Power. She is also the author of Connections, a psycho-educational shame-resilience curriculum that is being facilitated across the nation by mental health and addiction professionals. Her next book, Wholehearted: Spiritual Adventures in Falling Apart, Growing Up, and Finding Joy, will be released in 2011.

Welcome to June! We are just five months away from UP 2011. The speaker lineup is almost set and we can’t wait to announce the rest of the amazing individuals that will take the stage on October 27th.
This week some of our 2011 speakers and UP alumni highlighted the biggest stories making headlines.
David Eagleman is in the news again, this time for the U.S. launch of his latest book Incognito. Congratulations go out to David, this morning his book was already at #10 on Amazon’s best seller list. Visit NPR.com for a great story on his work and the new book.
Chef Jeff Henderson, who we announced as part of the UP 2011 speaker lineup earlier this month, made a preview appearance in Houston at a luncheon benefiting the Living Forward Alliance, highlighting how he turned around his own life to become a renowned chef.
UP 08 speaker Craig Kielburger‘s latest project Me to We is honoring socially conscious youth, adults and educators for their work to better their communities and the world. See the amazing nominees and vote here.

David Pogue, who amazed us with the latest technology at UP 10, reported for CBS News this week on the end of NASA’s shuttle program. While his fellow UP 10 speaker, Richard Florida, examined the changing geography and dynamics of NBA dominance as the league heads into its final games of the season.
And, Kevin Kelly, who also took the UP stage in 2010, shared the challenges of publishing an ebook. Good lessons for us all as technology continues to change our daily lives.

Another Wednesday another round of great UP alumni in the news stories!
We know there are quite a few iPhone users in our audience. If you count yourself as one of them, don’t miss UP 10 speaker David Pogue‘s tips for how to make your iPhone battery last longer.
As the school year wraps up, UP 10 speaker Adora Svitak has weighed on the American Prom tradition.
In addition to marking an UP alumni in the news post, today also marks Oprah’s last show. In honor of the landmark UP 08 speaker Craig Kielburger takes a look at the support Oprah has given his organization to help them build schools around the world.
UP 10 speaker Bill Nye was back in Texas this past week speaking in San Antonio about the money to be made in green industries.

The UP Experience 2011’s first speaker is . . . DANIEL PINK!

Currently best known as the author of Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, Pink is authority on human motivation and performance.
According to Pink, everything we think we know about what motivates us is wrong. He pits the latest scientific discoveries about the mind against claims that people can be motivated only by the hope of gain and the fear of loss. Pink cites numerous case studies revealing that “carrot and stick” motivation tactics can actually significantly reduce the ability of workers to produce creative solutions to problems. And, what truly motivates us once our basic survival needs are met is the ability to grow and develop, to realize our fullest potential. Drawing on research in psychology, economics, and sociology, Pink’s analysis — and new model — of motivation offers tremendous insight into our deepest nature.
Pink has published four books, authored numerous articles on business and technology for Wired, Harvard Business Review, The New York Times, The Telegraph, and Fast Company, and has appeared as a featured presenter at TED Global.

This week, UP 2010 speaker and New York Times tech critic David Pogue was on top of some of the week’s hottest news stories, logging comments on both Cisco’s decision to kill the Flip camera and the launch of Blackberry’s PlayBook
Also at UP 2010, Kiva founder Jessica Jackley gave us a preview of her new venture ProFounder. This past week she was interviewed on the details of Profounder on Benzinga and Daily Br!nk.
If you’ve had it on your list to get UP 2009 speaker Peter Sheahan’s new book, Making It Happen, wait no more! He’s a launched an enhanced version that includes seven in-depth videos feature Peter sharing his words of wisdom.

Before we dive into this weeks links we want to say thank you to everyone who joined us for last night’s Mini UP. Ankit Fadia and Matthew Knowles each brought a unique perspective to the stage. And, very importantly, we announced our very first speaker for UP 2011 last night, drumroll please . . . . Dan Pink! Pink is the highly acclaimed author of several books, the most recent of which is Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us. Pink focuses on businesses, technology and helping us make the most of ourselves in our day-to-day lives. We are so excited to bring him to UP this year.

Two big announcements for all of our Houston readers!
David Eagleman has won a fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. The Houston Chronicle says this is the first time a professor at Baylor College of Medicine has received the award.
And TONIGHT UP 09 speaker Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson will be giving a free lecture at the University of Houston. Let us know if you attend.
UP 08 speaker Ray Kurzweil is in the news again. The much talked about futurist is nominated for the 2011 TIME magazine TIME 100 list. Voting closes April 14 so vote now!
Another inaugural UP Experience speaker, Steve Wozniak, was in the news this week when he said he would consider returning to a larger role at Apple if they asked him.
For the social media users out there, are you suffering from FOMO? That is “Fear of Missing Out?” The New York Times detailed the phenomenon in an article referring to UP 09 Dan Ariely’s work.

Happy Wednesday! Time for more UP alumni in the news.
This week, The New York Times announced a timeline for long-rumored plans to establish a paywall on its site and the internet was flooded with opinions on the decision. Fast Company analyzed The Psychology Behind The New York Times Paywall and cited a video from UP 09 speaker Dan Ariely.
Another UP 09 speaker, Shawn Achor, put pen to paper (or fingers to a keyboard) in an article for the Harvard Business Review taking on the stigma, “Are Happy People Dumb?”
Also, this week it was UP 2010 speaker Bill Nye’s turn to serve as an expert to explain the situation at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan.
Meanwhile, Michio Kaku continued to be active in the media, but not on earthquake recovery. He has released a new book, Physics of The Future: How Science Will Shape Human Destiny and Our Daily Lives by the Year 2100. Interested in learning his predictions?
