UP Alumni In The News 10.12.11

Just three more UP alumni posts before we’re all at UP 2011 meeting another class of great attendees and future alumni speakers. If you’ve been considering attending don’t wait any longer! A limited number of seats are still available, register now!

There has been some pretty incredible, heart breaking and amazing news in the past week. We’re sure there isn’t a single one of you who hasn’t read, commented on and discussed the passing of Apple’s Steve Jobs this past week. Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is also an UP 08 alumni and he has some inspirational words and great memories to share about his friend and colleague in this video.

Fellow alumni from UP 09 David Pogue, tech writer at The New York Times also shared his thoughts on what Jobs career has done to the way we all live and communicate. Future UP alumni, Dan Pink also shared a poignant speech Jobs’ gave at Stanford University’s commencement.

Other UP alumni were receiving their own honors this week. UP 10 alumni Jessica Jackley along with Kiva co-founder Matt Flannery were honored as winners of The Economist’s Innovation Awards for their work in microfinance.

Also this week, UP 10 alumni Michael Eisner‘s The Eisner Foundation established a $100,000 award for those working to bridge the gap between senior citizens and young people, the first recipient is the Intergenerational Center at Temple University.

And last but certainly not least, UP 09 alumni Peter Diamandis and the X Prize Foundation announced the winner of the Wendy Schmidt Oil Cleanup X CHALLENGE. The winning team, from Illinois, developed a system that skimmed oil out of water 3 times better than the industry standard.

UP Alumni In The News 9.28.11

Yesterday marked one month until UP 2011. We can’t believe its already here! We’d love to hear which speaker you are most excited to hear this year!

And, while we’re busy with final preparations for this year’s UP Experience, our UP alumni have been busy pushing their initiatives forward. This past week:

John Gerzema at Inc.com took a look at “Why You Should Hire E-lancers,” citing UP 08 speaker Sir Ken Robinson‘s work on learning that takes place outside of the classroom and what these “citizen-teachers” can offer the rest of us.

As always tech companies are making headlines and UP 10 speaker David Pogue is breaking down the details for us. Don’t miss his analysis of Netflix’ recent announcement that it will be splitting off its DVD service into a separate service, Qwikster.

UP 09 alumni Michio Kaku was in the news this week as physicists around the world commented on an experiment that appeared to call into question Einstein’s theory of relativity.

UP Alumni In The News 9.14.11

Here we are, halfway through the week again and with more intriguing news from UP Experience alumni:

UP 10 speaker, Kevin Kelly, featured the new book End Malaria as recommended reading on his blog this week. The book, which features advice from some of the world’s best thought leaders on how to work smarter, isn’t about malaria, but $20 from each sale will go to fight the disease. End Malaria features essays not just from Kelly but many past and future UP Experience speakers including: Brene Brown, Dan Pink, and Sir Ken Robinson.

Fellow UP 10 speaker Dan Buettner and his Blue Zones Project joined with Wellmark, Healthways and Governor Terry Branstad of Iowa to launch a new Blue Zones initiative in the state.

Right here in Houston, UP 11 speaker, Laura Spanjian our city’s Sustainability Director, was part of the “Houston Drives Electric” launch and announced that Houston residents can expect to have access to 250 public electric charging stations by the end of 2012.

And, Spanjian’s fellow UP 11 speaker Dan Pink shared one of his favorite, free new productivity tools.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg Businessweek, reported on UP 09 speaker Dan Ariely’s research on cheating at Duke University.

UP 10 speaker and sleep expert James Maas was quoted in an article at Inc.com, “Should Your Employees Take Naps?” (Hint: Yes!)

The Business Insider reported on research from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute that has identified UP 08 speaker Malcolm Gladwell’s tipping point - the exact point at which minority-held ideas go mainstream.

UP Alumni In the News 6.1.11

Welcome to June! We are just five months away from UP 2011. The speaker lineup is almost set and we can’t wait to announce the rest of the amazing individuals that will take the stage on October 27th.

This week some of our 2011 speakers and UP alumni highlighted the biggest stories making headlines.

David Eagleman is in the news again, this time for the U.S. launch of his latest book Incognito. Congratulations go out to David, this morning his book was already at #10 on Amazon’s best seller list. Visit NPR.com for a great story on his work and the new book.

Chef Jeff Henderson, who we announced as part of the UP 2011 speaker lineup earlier this month, made a preview appearance in Houston at a luncheon benefiting the Living Forward Alliance, highlighting how he turned around his own life to become a renowned chef.

UP 08 speaker Craig Kielburger‘s latest project Me to We is honoring socially conscious youth, adults and educators for their work to better their communities and the world. See the amazing nominees and vote here.

David Pogue, who amazed us with the latest technology at UP 10, reported for CBS News this week on the end of NASA’s shuttle program. While his fellow UP 10 speaker, Richard Florida, examined the changing geography and dynamics of NBA dominance as the league heads into its final games of the season.

And, Kevin Kelly, who also took the UP stage in 2010, shared the challenges of publishing an ebook. Good lessons for us all as technology continues to change our daily lives.

UP Alumni In The News 5.25.11

Another Wednesday another round of great UP alumni in the news stories!

We know there are quite a few iPhone users in our audience. If you count yourself as one of them, don’t miss UP 10 speaker David Pogue‘s tips for how to make your iPhone battery last longer.

As the school year wraps up, UP 10 speaker Adora Svitak has weighed on the American Prom tradition.

In addition to marking an UP alumni in the news post, today also marks Oprah’s last show. In honor of the landmark UP 08 speaker Craig Kielburger takes a look at the support Oprah has given his organization to help them build schools around the world.

UP 10 speaker Bill Nye was back in Texas this past week speaking in San Antonio about the money to be made in green industries.

“Math needs better marketing,” says UP 09 speaker Neil deGrasse Tyson in an interview with Soledad O’Brien on CNN on the drivers of tomorrow’s economy. A hint – math and science literacy today is the key to a successful tomorrow.

UP 09 speaker Peter Diamandis‘ X-Prize Foundation has partnered with Qualcomm Incorporated to launch the Tricorder X-Prize, “a $10 million prize to develop a mobile solution capable of diagnosing patients better than or equal to a panel of board certified physicians.”

UP 10 speaker and Blue Zones author Dan Buettner was cited in the an article detail the influence we have on our social networks and our network’s effect on us. “The ripples of our health behaviors travel much farther than anyone might expect,” says Aditi Nerurkar in The Huffington Post echoing the sentiments of several great speakers from The UP Experience.

David Pogue who spoke to us in 2010 took on the controversy surrounding Microsoft’s purchase of Skype on his blog this week.

UP Alumni In The News 5.4.11

Happy first Wednesday in May! We hope you caught yesterday’s latest speaker announcement – we are particularly proud to be bringing Dr. Anthony Atala to Houston.

As always, UP speakers past and present continue to make news. Below are some of this week’s biggest stories.

With gas prizes on the rise and summer vacations looming, U.S. News took a look at “Why $4 Gas Makes Consumers Freak Out” and cited a fantastic New York Times op-ed from way back in 2008 authored by UP 09 speaker Dan Ariely that is suddenly very timely again.

UP 08 speaker Malcolm Gladwell explained to The Atlantic why he is almost always 24 hours behind the news cycle. It was also announced that Gladwell’s work will be featured in a new sports and pop culture website being launched by ESPN’s The Sports Guy, aka Bill Simmons.

Also from The Atlantic, they’ve announced thatUP 10 speaker Richard Florida’s position as a senior editor there is expanding. Atlantic Media is now launching a website based on his work and vision, and if you’re in the job market, they’re looking for an editor.

UP 10 speaker David Pogue closed out the news cycle on Apple’s “Locationgate” in a write up on his blog.

Luis Von Ahn, another UP 10 speaker and inventor of reCAPTCHA has announced his next venture. A new site called Duolingo that will work on translations and help users learn new languages.
