Good morning and happy Wednesday to all!
One of our favorite things about The UP Experience is that it allows us to uncover new fields of study, new practices and new passions that stick with us long after the speakers have left the stage. It has also introduced us to a community of people in Houston and around the world who are constantly innovating and announcing new ideas that generate recognition in places around the world.
We do our best to keep up with past speakers to stay on top of their new research, business ventures and publications. Starting today, we’ll be posting weekly updates of notable UP Alumni in the news. Check back each Wednesday to see the latest.
And don’t forget, The UP Experience is about discussion and we love to hear your feedback. If you find a news story you’d like to share please post it as a comment, and let us know what your thoughts are on the stories posted here.

Plenty Magazine recognizes 20 businesses, 20 people, and 10 ideas that will change the world. Not surprisingly, Peter Diamandis made the list.
Diamandis is Chairman and CEO of the X Prize Foundation, which awards large sums of money as incentive to design objects that benefit humanity. From the Plenty website:
Most recently, he launched the Progressive Automotive X Prize. The $10 million quest is for a road-tested, production line–ready car that gets at least 100 miles per gallon (or the energy equivalent) and produces about 90 percent less greenhouse gas emissions than conventional cars. Consider this the tech and auto worlds’ Nobel Prize.
Click here to read the rest of the Plenty Magazine Top 20.
It’s probably cliché to observe that Peter Diamandis puts his money where his mouth is. He embodies true commitment to seeing one’s ideals made tangible. However, even if you happen to be a billionaire, changing the world is still hard work.
When I read about the X Prize and all that it has inspired, I momentarily fall into overwhelmed, “little me” mode. That’s the voice that says, “Well yeah, if I had millions of dollars to blow, I could do something important, too.” And then, my thoughts take an UPturn. Isn’t the greatest ideal of all that anyone, anywhere, using the resources they have available, can make a difference?
Peter Diamandis is among the amazing speakers slated to appear at The UP Experience, October 15, 2009. Have you registered?
