Just three more UP alumni posts before we’re all at UP 2011 meeting another class of great attendees and future alumni speakers. If you’ve been considering attending don’t wait any longer! A limited number of seats are still available, register now!
There has been some pretty incredible, heart breaking and amazing news in the past week. We’re sure there isn’t a single one of you who hasn’t read, commented on and discussed the passing of Apple’s Steve Jobs this past week. Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is also an UP 08 alumni and he has some inspirational words and great memories to share about his friend and colleague in this video.
Fellow alumni from UP 09 David Pogue, tech writer at The New York Times also shared his thoughts on what Jobs career has done to the way we all live and communicate. Future UP alumni, Dan Pink also shared a poignant speech Jobs’ gave at Stanford University’s commencement.
Other UP alumni were receiving their own honors this week. UP 10 alumni Jessica Jackley along with Kiva co-founder Matt Flannery were honored as winners of The Economist’s Innovation Awards for their work in microfinance.
Also this week, UP 10 alumni Michael Eisner‘s The Eisner Foundation established a $100,000 award for those working to bridge the gap between senior citizens and young people, the first recipient is the Intergenerational Center at Temple University.
And last but certainly not least, UP 09 alumni Peter Diamandis and the X Prize Foundation announced the winner of the Wendy Schmidt Oil Cleanup X CHALLENGE. The winning team, from Illinois, developed a system that skimmed oil out of water 3 times better than the industry standard.

This week, UP 2010 speaker and New York Times tech critic David Pogue was on top of some of the week’s hottest news stories, logging comments on both Cisco’s decision to kill the Flip camera and the launch of Blackberry’s PlayBook
Also at UP 2010, Kiva founder Jessica Jackley gave us a preview of her new venture ProFounder. This past week she was interviewed on the details of Profounder on Benzinga and Daily Br!nk.
If you’ve had it on your list to get UP 2009 speaker Peter Sheahan’s new book, Making It Happen, wait no more! He’s a launched an enhanced version that includes seven in-depth videos feature Peter sharing his words of wisdom.
David Eagleman continued to conquer the media with a profile in The New Yorker and Houston Modern Luxury (check out page 79 of the digital edition from that link)
And, Shawn Achor, continued work on his latest book The Happiness Advantage, launching a preview of The Happiness Advantage DVD from his Facebook page.

Our thoughts have been with all those affected by the earthquake in Japan since we heard the news, and we continue to be glued to news coverage of the rescue efforts. UP 2009 speaker and theoretical physicist Michio Kaku has been busy helping reporters and the public understand the potentially long lasting physical affects of the quake. We’ve also heard that UP 2009 Speaker Neil deGrasse Tyson has been interviewed about the quake, but haven’t been able to locate coverage. If you’ve seen it please add the link below.
The future is your decision says UP 2008 speaker, economist and trend analyst Alan Beaulieu. Check out the link to get his investment advice, as well as short and long term economic predictions.
UP 2010 speaker Jessica Jackley was named to the World Economic Forum’s Forum of Young Global Leaders. An elite and well deserved honor! Check out the link to learn more about the program and the other members of its 2011 class.
Congrats are also in order for UP 2010 speaker Dennis Littky! Littky was honored by the New England Board of Higher Education (NEBHE) this week for his work in overhauling higher education.
