Our ninth speaker at UP 2012 is someone who…

• Is a true brainiac in every sense of the word.
• Enjoys a “parallel” career as a writer, having written a fiction book that not only became an international best seller, it was also transformed into a full opera that debuted in May at the Royal Opera House in London.

Our Eighth UP Speaker is…

The UP Experience is pleased to welcome Jane McGonigal, author of The New York Times best seller Reality is Broken, and world-renowned designer of alternate reality games, where real-life activity is re-framed as a game. During her UP presentation — “How Gaming Will Change the World” — Jane will passionately share the reasons her number-one goal in life is to see a game developer win a Nobel Peace Prize.

As Creative Director for Social Chocolate, Jane develops games powered by the science of positive emotion and social connection. She specializes in games that challenge players to tackle real-world problems, such as poverty, hunger, and climate change, through planetary-scale collaboration. Her games have been featured in The New York Times, Wired, and The Economist, and on MTV, CNN, and NPR.

Jane believes game designers are on a humanitarian mission, and games can be created to improve the way we learn, work, solve problems, and lead our real lives. And she passionately argues that game designers are effectively “happiness engineers” or, rather, experts in making difficult tasks engaging.

Jane has created and deployed award-winning games and secret missions in more than 30 countries on six continents, for partners such as the American Heart Association, the International Olympics Committee, the World Bank Institute, and the New York Public Library.

To learn more about Jane and what we will gain by making reality work more like a game,

Our Fifth UP Speaker is…

DONALD R. SADOWAY

The UP Experience is pleased to welcome Donald R. Sadoway, the John F. Elliott Professor of Materials Chemistry at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During his presentation, “The Liquid Metal Battery – The Missing Link to Renewable Energy,” the professor known as MIT’s most popular, will discuss the problem at the heart of alternative-energy sources such as sun and wind: how to store the power generated from these sources so it can be delivered to the grid all the time, day and night, even when the wind isn’t blowing and the sun isn’t shining.

Don and his team of students at MIT are currently developing innovations in energy storage, including what is referred to as a battery miracle – an inexpensive, incredibly efficient battery that has caught the attention…and backing…of Bill Gates, whose funding is helping to bring the product to market.

One of TIME magazine’s “100 Most Influential People in the World” in 2012, Don is an entertaining and informative teacher who has authored over 140 scientific papers and holds 16 U.S. patents. His research ranges from metals production and portable energy storage devices to his “liquid battery” for renewable energy applications, and non-lithium-ion batteries for automotive applications.
