UP Alumni In The News 10.12.11

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

Just three more UP alumni posts before we’re all at UP 2011 meeting another class of great attendees and future alumni speakers. If you’ve been considering attending don’t wait any longer! A limited number of seats are still available, register now!

There has been some pretty incredible, heart breaking and amazing news in the past week. We’re sure there isn’t a single one of you who hasn’t read, commented on and discussed the passing of Apple’s Steve Jobs this past week. Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is also an UP 08 alumni and he has some inspirational words and great memories to share about his friend and colleague in this video.

Fellow alumni from UP 09 David Pogue, tech writer at The New York Times also shared his thoughts on what Jobs career has done to the way we all live and communicate. Future UP alumni, Dan Pink also shared a poignant speech Jobs’ gave at Stanford University’s commencement.

Other UP alumni were receiving their own honors this week. UP 10 alumni Jessica Jackley along with Kiva co-founder Matt Flannery were honored as winners of The Economist’s Innovation Awards for their work in microfinance.

Also this week, UP 10 alumni Michael Eisner‘s The Eisner Foundation established a $100,000 award for those working to bridge the gap between senior citizens and young people, the first recipient is the Intergenerational Center at Temple University.

And last but certainly not least, UP 09 alumni Peter Diamandis and the X Prize Foundation announced the winner of the Wendy Schmidt Oil Cleanup X CHALLENGE. The winning team, from Illinois, developed a system that skimmed oil out of water 3 times better than the industry standard.

Learn more (and remember it!) at UP 2011

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

With a little over 3 weeks until UP, you may be wondering what some of the “takeaways” will be on October 27, or what tools you will learn that you can immediately apply to your personal and professional life.

Tools that will make you more confident, more impactful, more engaging, help you build better relationships, and positively impact your business.

Interested? Then read on…because here’s what you’ll learn from just one of our presenters – Ron White, renowned memory champion, and a Texas boy, to boot! With Ron’s memorization techniques, you’ll learn how to:

Triple your memory and triple your productivity.

Remember names and faces, even months after meeting someone for the first time.

Take notes from a seminar or conference and then recall the information six months or six years later.

Learn a new process or procedure in half the time.

Give a speech or make a presentation without using notes.

Yes, you will learn all that during Ron’s 20-minute presentation. Could your own memory techniques use a boost?

Then sign UP today. If you haven’t made reservations to attend, now is the time to do so. Seats are limited…we hope to see you there!

Sign UP and Be Better Informed

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

As Bob Stutman, one of our 2011 UP presenters, has predicted for the past two years, we have reached an unfortunate new milestone today. For the first time in history, automobile accidents are now the SECOND leading cause of death by accident in the United States. What is the LEADING cause of death by accident? Drug overdose!

More people die from prescription drug overdose than from all other drugs combined. Get in the know and learn how to take action at UP 11 Photo courtesy of flickr/NVinnacco

This was announced on Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control, based on statistics from 2009 (the most recent year available). In fact, more people die from prescription drug overdose than from all other drugs combined (heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine).

Even more startling is the news that less than 5% of those who died from prescription drug overdose got them from “dope peddlers”. Unfortunately, the source of the supply is more often parents, relatives, friends and, ultimately, physicians. We must take note of this, and we must do better!

Shocking? You bet. And this is just one of the nuggets of information you probably didn’t know but will be amazed to learn at The UP Experience.

Register today, and become better informed about the events, facts, and information that affect ALL aspects of your life.

UP Alumni In The News 9.21.11

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

It’s been a busy week at UP! We hit 100 followers on Facebook this week, posted so many past UP talks on YouTube and dove into all the details that need to be ironed out with The UP Experience just over a month away!

We imagine our UP alumni and UP 11 speakers have also been busy, here are some of their activities making headlines this week:

Learn how to improve your memory skills from expert Ron White at UP 11. Image courtesy of Flickr/therichbrooks

UP 11 speaker and memory expert Ron White was featured in SUCCESS Magazine this week. White had an MRI taken at the University of Texas this week, while he memorized information. The results showed that White uses 35 percent more of his brain when memorizing than the average person! Don’t miss him at UP 2011 when he shares his tips and tricks!

UP 08 speaker Craig Kielburger took to the Huffington Post to talk about the incredible difference education can make for a child in their article, “An Education Takes Kids from Slums to Schools.

On a light note, UP 10 speaker and New York Times tech columnist David Pogue took some time to help us all get up to speed on the latest cultural references in his guide, “Internet Memes 101: A Guide to Online Wackiness.”

UP Alumni In The News 9.14.11

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

Here we are, halfway through the week again and with more intriguing news from UP Experience alumni:

Mosquito nets like this one can prevent malaria - support an important cause and learn more about smart ways of working by purchasing the book End Malaria. Image courtesy of Flickr/Sheep "R" Us

UP 10 speaker, Kevin Kelly, featured the new book End Malaria as recommended reading on his blog this week. The book, which features advice from some of the world’s best thought leaders on how to work smarter, isn’t about malaria, but $20 from each sale will go to fight the disease. End Malaria features essays not just from Kelly but many past and future UP Experience speakers including: Brene Brown, Dan Pink, and Sir Ken Robinson.

Fellow UP 10 speaker Dan Buettner and his Blue Zones Project joined with Wellmark, Healthways and Governor Terry Branstad of Iowa to launch a new Blue Zones initiative in the state.

Right here in Houston, UP 11 speaker, Laura Spanjian our city’s Sustainability Director, was part of the “Houston Drives Electric” launch and announced that Houston residents can expect to have access to 250 public electric charging stations by the end of 2012.

And, Spanjian’s fellow UP 11 speaker Dan Pink shared one of his favorite, free new productivity tools.
